Hasanuddin, the Motivator of Biogas Sector Development in Sinjai District
Mr. Hasanuddin, living in Palae Village, South Sinjai Subdistrict, Sinjai District, South Sulawesi Province, together with his wife, Mrs. Nurhayani, and their four children. He is a farmer but he also has the expertise as a mason to support the family economy.
He was introduced to biogas technology through a demonstration plot of biogas reactor development in South Sinjai Distrcit constructed by Domestic Biogas (BIRU) partner constructor managed by Mr. Aqdar. As he lives near the demonstration plot, he is interested and attempted to contact the master biogas reactor builder, Mr. Tawwil, to build a biogas reactor in his home. Since 2011 until now, Mr. Hasanuddin has been one of BIRU users among the Patohoni Farmers’ Group.
Since the biogas reactor is able to operate flawlessly, he is very pleased as other than the source of alternative energy to cook, the facility has been able to produce organic fertilizer from the sludge (bio-slurry) which is able to support activities in his farm land.
His farm land occupies a one-hectare area and is situated in two different locations. After two months of biogas reactor operation, bio-slurry starts to discharge. He then prepared a demonstration plot for bio-slurry application as organic fertilizer in his farm land. Five hundred cucumber seedlings and 200 eggplant seedlings are grown in the demonstration plot and the yield is worth Rp 3,500,000 in the market for the cucumber and Rp 2,350,000 for the eggplant. The two farm products are marketed in local market around Sinjai District.
In addition to the bio-slurry application for these two crops, he also applies bio-slurry in other crops, such as rice paddy, chili pepper, pepper, sweet potato, melon, and water melon.
In 2016, he applied bio-slurry as both solid and liquid bio-slurry on 4,000 chili pepper seedlings. A single chili pepper plant may produce around 4 kilograms and will last up to 97 harvesting cycle before it is replaced with a fresh new plant.
The gross revenue of a single harvesting period of chili plant is more than Rp 80,000,000. It has been able to penetrate a major retail market, such as Carrefour and Lotte Mart in Makassar. The success of penetrating this major market is due to the quality of the chili pepper and it relatively has longer shelf life.
In addition to concentrating on farming activities, Mr. Hasanuddin is also a member of biogas construction team and is a master mason since 2014 up to now. He has built a number of biogas reactors around Sinjai District.
Backed by his extended experience in biogas sector, he has been invited as resource person by local administratives to share his experience especially for bio-slurry application.
His experiences as the resource person include among others:
– In 2014, on Socialization of Biogas organized by the Office of Energy and Mineral Resources of South Sulawesi Province and other relevant offices, such as the Office of Agriculture, Regional Planning and Development Agency, Office of Estate Crops, and so forth.
– In 2015, on Biogas Socialization and Bio-slurry Application organized by the Office of Energy and Mineral Resources of South Sulawesi Province in collaboration with Local Government Agencies of Sinjai District, South Sulawesi Province.
– In 2016 on Biogas Socialization and Bio-slurry Application organized by Office of Energy and Mineral Resources of South Sulawesi Province in collaboration with Local Government Agencies of Bantaeng District, South Sulawesi Province.
– In 2017, a resource person to give him a testimonial during the Community Consultation on Development Planning at South Sulawesi Province level. (Rosmiati Lantara)
